Determines Basic Type, Candidate Types, Preferred Wings, Tri-Center (aka trifix, tritype)
We all have to live together, so we might as well live together happily.
- 14th Dalai Lama
Early in life we develop an initial belief about ourselves and a compensation for that self-belief.
Type 9 Initial Self-Belief: “I am not in unity as I am.”
Type 9 Compensation: "I must accommodate others' agenda and opinions in order to feel at ease and in harmony with them."
Over time this gets generalized beyond the self into a core focus that also shapes how we perceive and interact with the world at large.
Type 9 Core Focus: Harmony comes from getting along with others and falling into comfortable routines. This requires that I accommodate others by finding common ground and minimizing my own agenda when around others as well as finding comfort and peace of mind for myself.
Personality characteristics that might arise from the type 9 core focus include:
The wings are represented by the numbers on either side of a given type as seen on the Enneagram symbol or diagram. These types are said to have an additional influence upon the type being looked at. The wing types for type 9 are type 8 and type 1.
Although type 9 is influenced by both wings, an individual will generally be influenced more by one of the wings than the other. The wing with more influence is said to be the preferred or dominant wing.
9 wing 8 (9w8) - preferred 8 wing
Common Name: The Referee
9 wing 1 (9w1) - preferred 1 wing
Common Name: The Dreamer
Below are samplings from some popular or well-known Enneagram authors. Click on the sources after the descriptions to further explore these interpretations.
The Nine with an Eight-Wing: The Referee
People of this subtype mix the ability to be agreeable and to comfort others with endurance and strength. These people enjoy socializing and good times and are more attracted to losing themselves in sensuality and comforting routines that interfere with their ability to stay focused on significant goals.1
The Nine with a One-Wing: The Dreamer
People of this subtype are imaginative and creative, often able to synthesize different schools of thought or points of view into a visions of an ideal world. They are less adventurous and more reserved than people of the other subtype, expressing anger with restraint and smoldering indignation.1
Nine with an Eight Wing (1w9): More grounded and embodied, these Nines often exude a sense of laid-back cool. They are stubborn and quicker to anger when provoked.2
Nine with a One Wing (1w2): More lofty and idealistic, these Nines often manifest their attention to unity through ideas and imagination. They seem gentler on the surface.2
Nines with an Eight wing may be exhibit more personal power and take more control of situations.3
Nines with a One wing may be more punctual, discerning, and judgmental.3
Nines with an Eight wing (9w8) tend to be more confrontational than other Nines, but they are also quick to be conciliatory. More energized, confident, stubborn, outgoing and inner-directed than the 9w1s, 9w8s have more access to anger and express it more openly if they or others are threatened.4
Nines with a One wing (9w1) are more critical, orderly, introverted and passive-aggressive than other Nines. Because of their concern about matters of right and wrong they’re apt to be involved in peacemaking efforts or other social justice causes.4
Nines with a more developed Eight wing tend to be more outgoing, assertive, and antiauthoritarian.5
Nines with a more developed One wing tend to be more orderly, critical, emotionally controlled, and compliant.5
Nine With an 8 Wing
Can seem highly centered, take what they do seriously but remain unimpressed with themselves. 8 wing can bring a strong internal sense of direction.6
Nine With a 1 Wing
Tend to have been “model children.” Instinctively worked to please their parents by being virtuous, orderly, and little trouble.6

The wing types of an Enneagram type are the types on either side of a type as seen on the Enneagram symbol.
Although both the wing types have an influence on the type between them, one wing type is often preferred over the other.
This preferred wing type has a stronger influence than the non-preferred wing type and creates a variation of the type (e.g., 9w8 vs. 9w1).
